Born London, England, 1920. Educated in South Africa and London. Served in British armed forces 1938 to 1946 (Ethiopian and Burma campaigns). After the war briefly studied art. In
1957 his paintings were included in Metavisual, Tachiste and Abstract Art, the first survey of British post war abstract art.

Left London for San Francisco in 1960, and in 1961 taught at the University of California, Berkeley. A founding editor of Artforum magazine (1962) he became involved in art criticism. He also wrote for Art International, Art in America, Art News, and Studio International. Organized the exhibition, Pop Art USA at the Oakland Art Museum, in 1963. One person exhibition of paintings at the M.H. de Young Museum, San Francisco, 1963.

As director of the Art Gallery, U. C, Irvine (1965-67) he organized the exhibition Abstract Expressionist Ceramics; and as senior curator of the Pasadena Art Museum (1967-1970) he organized the exhibition Serial Imagery and retrospective of Roy Lichtenstein (1967), Wayne Thiebaud (1968), Andy Warhol (1970), Donald Judd (1971), as well as the first museum exhibitions of James Turrell, Robert Irwin, and Richard Serra.

1971 he became editor-in-chief of Artforum magazine. His books include Cezanne Watercolors (1967), Serial Imagery (1968), Andy Warhol (1967), Roy Lichtenstein (1972), Ellsworth Kelly (1972), Decisions, Decisions (with Robert Bell, 1976), Weegee:Tater und Opfer (1978), Andy Warhol (with Jean Baudrillard) 1990 and Provocations (1996).

In 1978 as director of the Akron Art Museum Coplans founded the Midwest art magazine Dialogue. At Akron he organized the first American exhibition of Brancusi's photographs (traveled to five major museums) and the first American exhibition of the montages of John Heartfield, (traveled to the Jewish Museum, New York).

In 1980 Coplans began a new career in photography. His one person exhibitions include: the Art Institute of Chicago (1981, 1989) the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (1988), the Museum of Modern Art, NY (1988), Musee de la Veille Charite, Marseilles (1989), Frankfurter Kunstverein (1990), Museum Boymans-van Beuningan, Rotterdam (1990), the Fundacio Calouste Gulbenkian, Lisbon (1990), the Centre George Pompidou, Paris (1994) Ludwig Forum, Aachen (1995), P.S.1. Contemporary Art Center, NY (1997), Paco das Artes, Sao Paulo (1998) Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh, Malmo Konsthall, Sweden (1999) ICAR, Paris (2000).
Coplans's photographs have been collected by over sixty museums in the United States and elsewhere.

Coplans received the Frank Jewitt Mather award of the College Art Association in 1974, Guggenheim Fellowships in 1969 and 1985, National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships 1975, 1980, 1986 and 1992, and in 1998 an award from the International Association of Art Critics. In 2001 he received the award of Officer de L'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres from the French government.

In 2002, A BODY, a major monograph on Coplans's work is published by powerHouse Books. In 2003, A BODY receives the Distinctive Merit Award from the Art Director's Club, and was also named "Best Book of 2002" by Photo District News and the Village Voice.
